Map will help to highlight crime

Worcester Editorial 20th Sep, 2017   0

A MAP to help Worcestershire people pinpoint where they feel safe across the county will be launched at Worcestershire Pride’s event this week.

The Women’s Equality Party (WEP) will be inviting visitors to the event to identify areas in Worcestershire where they feel that they have been the victims of homophobic behaviour or where they feel safe.

The map will be part of a stall that WEP will have at Pride’s main celebration at South Quay, Worcester, on Saturday.

WEP’s Leisa Taylor said: “Homophobic hate crime has increased more quickly and is higher than the national average in Worcestershire, so we think that it’s important to highlight this issue and talk to people about how they feel about it.

“We’d like people to add to the map by pinpointing different areas of the county where they’ve either experienced problems or feel particularly safe and supported.

“We’re really pleased to be supporting Worcestershire Pride’s celebration and we’re hoping to talk to as many people as possible about equality in Worcestershire on Saturday.”

Andre Oldfield, chairman of Worcestershire Pride, said: “We are delighted that WEP is helping us to deliver vital awareness building around homophobic and gender-based hate crime.”

WEP will also be encouraging people at the celebration to take #equality selfies and contribute to a bunting of hope with craft materials available so visitors can add their own positive message to bunting created in the summer by WEP and Green Party activists.
