A HOSPICE in Worcester is calling on intrepid trekkers to find out more about their challenge to scale Mount Toubkal in 2027.
Mount Toubkal is North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167m and offers the adventurous a chance to experience rugged trails, sweeping valleys, and unforgettable views, while raising funds for a local charity.
St Richard’s Hospice is inviting anyone interested in learning more about the challenge to a free online information evening at 7pm on Monday July 27.
Ann-Marie Dodson took part in the hospice’s Sahara trek in 2023 and has signed up to take on Mount Toubkal.
She said: “I had never been to the hospice myself, but my children’s house master had died there some months before. What better way to honour his memory than have an adventure and do something useful, as the hospice relies on the public’s fundraising to keep running.
“The hospice organised various walks across Worcestershire so all the participants could get to know each other and get fit. They were a lovely group with lots of laughter. The Sahara trek was a challenge at times as it was hot, and the dunes and sand made for tough walking at times, but that’s the achievement.
“The support staff were excellent hosts and cooks. It’s part of the experience to spend quality time with people from another culture, and it didn’t matter we couldn’t talk their language. They were aware of the fund-raising cause and totally supportive.
“We had the best trek leader that I have ever met and I’ve trekked the world. We all felt very safe and well looked after. I’m still in contact with her and our guides.
“The opportunity has now come along to go back to Morocco to climb Mt Toubkal with St Richard’s. I know it will be amazing and a real achievement to summit the highest peak in North Africa. The flexibility in fundraising options makes it doable, alongside the support and guidance from the hospice in terms of fundraising and publicity. All for a good cause whilst getting fit and having fun.”
Funds raised by trekkers will help the hospice continue offering free, expert care for adults with an illness that can’t be cured, and support for their loved ones and carers.
