A MAN has been detained under the Mental Health Act after threatening to set himself on fire in front of shocked onlookers.

Police were called to an address in London Road on Monday (October 28) at 3.50pm to find a man hanging out the window of a flat above the Pro Fascia shop with a fuel can allegedly full of petrol.

Officers closed the road in both directions while they tried to coax the man down before he was eventually arrested and held under the Mental Health Act an hour later.

The road was re-opened a short time after.
