Making friends

CHILDREN at Worcester’s Abberley House Nursery now have a new prickly friend after forest school leader Jane Dallard teamed up with Bromsgrove’s Willows Hedgehog Rescue Centre.

Willows has assisted Jane when she has found hedgehogs in the past and during conversations between Jane and Jayne Lawrence from the rescue centre they came up with the idea of children attending forest school helping to care for rescued hogs in their woodland.

Jane has rescued a number of the spiky creatures which she has taken them to Willows if they needed more attention.

Earlier in the year ‘Wilson’ was collected by the nursery and now they have a female hedgehog ‘Mrs Tiggy Winkle’ who, after being discovered as a tiny baby in July, is now fit and healthy and ready to return to the wild.

Jane said the scheme fitted in with Abberley House’s outdoor ethos.

“The children of Abberley House are excited to clean out the box and are prepare for her arrival.

“Supporting and rehoming the hedgehogs means they are learning to care for creatures they would never normally see or experience.”
