Link Road works will mean further delays

Worcester Editorial 21st Feb, 2017   0

CITY motorists face more overnight closures on the A4440 Southern Link Road as the current phase of dualling progresses.

To enable essential surfacing and drainage works to take place as part of the improvements, which are due to be completed this summer, there will be two phases of overnight closures on the link road.

The first period of closures began on Monday (February 20) and will run until Friday, March 10 and Tuesday, March 21 to Friday, March 24.

The closures will run on weekdays from 9pm to 6am and will be used to work on improvements to the Norton roundabout – in preparation for dualling with the Whittington roundabout – and a new dedicated left-hand turn from Whittington Road to the westbound Crookbarrow Way, to remove the current ‘give way’ arrangement.

Disruption to road users and local residents will be kept to a minimum where possible during the work and clear diversion signage will be put in place.

Current temporary traffic management arrangements on the link road will also change, with road users being moved to the new road alignment.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member for economy, skills and infrastructure, said: “This is a vital scheme for us to enable faster journey times and improved access to Worcester and beyond.

“While we’re currently focused on delivering the Norton to Whittington part of the scheme, we’re also working on plans to dual the entire route from Powick roundabout right up to Whittington roundabout.

“We’ve worked closely with our contractor Griffiths to plan these works carefully, to ensure we keep the number of overnight closures to an absolute minimum.

“However, we recognise that overnight closures can be inconvenient for residents and road users and would like to apologise for any disruption these essential works may cause.”
