Lights to finally shine on Shap Drive

A LONG-RUNNING bid to shine a light on a Warndon community centre and tackle the scourge of fly tipping which blights the car park has reached the finish line thanks to funds from a ward councillor.

Community chiefs at the Shap Drive Community Centre have flicked the switch on the new lighting after Coun Ceri Stalker dug deep to fund the much-needed enterprise.

The Labour city and county councillor for the area used cash from her divisional fund, which can be used to support local schemes, to back the bid which took 18 months to complete.

It’s hoped the new lighting on the centre’s car park will encourage local residents to take part in activities at the hub, as well as discouraging fly-tipping at the top end of the car park.

“I have been delighted to be able to support this scheme and to now see the new lighting in place at the centre,” Coun Stalker said.

“Before the lights were installed the car park was very dark and it was difficult to make the hub a welcoming and friendly place for those wishing to use it.

“I’m pleased, following feedback from local residents, I was able to use county council funds to address this. I hope more residents will be encourage to take part in the fantastic range of activities being provided by local groups and Worcester Community Trust.

“Our community centres across Worcester provide a vital service and we will continue to work hard to support them and build stronger communities,” she added.
