Lib Dems unveil five year plan for Worcester healthcare

LIBERAL Democrats have unveiled an ambitious five year plan for Worcester healthcare.

The plan would ensure that patients in the city have the legal right to see their GP within a week, or within 24 hours if they have an urgent need.

The announcement follows concerning statistics from last year, revealing that 959,922 appointments in Herefordshire and Worcestershire took longer than two weeks to happen, representing 17.4 per cent of all appointments.

As well as 257,246 appointments took over a month to schedule, accounting for 4.7 per cent of all appointments.

Under the Liberal Democrats’ plan, every patient will be guaranteed an appointment within seven days, the party argues that such timely access is crucial to preventing health conditions from worsening due to delays.

To achieve this goal, the Liberal Democrats propose several key measures:

Increasing GP Numbers: The party aims to boost the number of full-time equivalent GPs by 8,000. This will be accomplished through enhanced recruitment efforts and retaining more experienced GPs.

Expanding Prescribing Rights: GPs’ workloads will be reduced by granting qualified pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and paramedics more prescribing rights and public health advisory roles.

24/7 GP Booking System: A universal, round-the-clock GP booking system will be introduced to streamline appointment scheduling.

Reducing Bureaucracy: By eliminating top-down bureaucracy, practices will have greater autonomy to hire necessary staff and invest in training.

Worcester’s Liberal Democrats are calling for a ‘fair deal for this community’s patients,’ emphasising the urgent need for reform.

Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Worcester, Mel Allcott said: “This Conservative government has driven our area’s local health services into the ground. Thousands of patients in Worcester are facing agonisingly long waits, often in terrible pain whilst waiting to see their GP.

“The Conservative party have proven themselves totally unfit to run our NHS. They have abandoned local health services and it is patients bearing the brunt of their neglect.

“It should not be too much to ask for patients to be able to see their GP when they need to. That is why the Liberal Democrats have committed to a fair deal for this community’s patients and legal right to see a GP within a week.”
