Let the celebrations begin

WORCESTER kicked off 18 months of celebrations to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta by reuniting King John with it.

The moment the Magna Carta was used to confront King John in 1215 was re-enacted by 13th century barons who ‘stormed’ Worcester Cathedral on Thursday (March 4).

The cathedral will be holding an exhibition until December 2016 where visitors can attend lectures and talks.

There will also be a presentation from Sir Robert Worcester, chairman of the National Magna Carta 800th Committee. These will be held by King Johns tomb.

A children’s play will be performed by Worcester Repertory Company entitled A Tale of Bolshie Barons, a Crafty King and a Timeworn tomb in Wooded Worcestershire through April and May. The performance will also tour schools around the county.

The Very Rev Peter Atkinson, Dean of Worcester, said: “Worcester Cathedral boasts a unique role in the story of Magna Carta that no other place can claim. We have King John’s tomb and his will, giving visitors a direct connection with the monarch who, whether he liked it or not, sealed the document that established the principle of the rule of law.”

On June 14 a special service will be held at the cathedral with a plea of bells to mark the actually day of the 800 years along with a series of concerts.

In September they will also display digital exhibitions of historical artifacts including King John’s will, which stated he be buried at Worcester Cathedral.
