THE FIRST ever candidate for the Women’s Equality Party (WEP) in Worcestershire will be standing in the county council elections in Worcester’s Rainbow Hill ward.
Worcester mum Leisa Taylor hopes to bring a new approach to County Hall politics and work with all parties on key issues affecting local people.
Leisa, Information Coordinator for Gloucestershire Youth Support Team, is married with a daughter.
“I want to work with all parties to put equality first,” she said. “That means tackling the pay gap that sees Worcester women earn on average £100 a week less than men, fighting to protect services for children under threat from government and county council cuts and working to protect vulnerable women in all our communities.”
Leisa wants to see affordable childcare for all parents who want to go back to work before their children start school, equal representation of councillors at County Hall and an end to violence against women and girls.
She also wants to work with young people and their families to ensure new laws on compulsory sex and relationships education are relevant and sensitive to their needs.
Since WEP was launched nationally less than two years ago, the number of branch members and supporters across the county has grown to more than 200.
“Everyone benefits from greater equality, not just women,” said Leisa.
“I’m passionate about equality, of course, but I’m also passionate about Worcester and its people. “I’ve lived here for 24 years and am totally committed to making change for the better for everyone in Rainbow Hill,” she added.
