Leg club marks 10th anniversary

Worcester Editorial 30th Mar, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A POPULAR Worcester club which has brought people living with leg conditions together celebrated a decade of friendship and fun with a tea party.

The Leg Club was started in 2006 by Ellie Lindsay, a district nurse, who became aware that those suffering with leg ulcers were more likely to be isolated and were prevented from leading a normal work or social life.

It was found that isolation significantly affects leg ulcer patients’ response to treatment.

This information led the Lindsay Leg Club foundation, the charity that run the Worcester Leg Club, to create community-based leg ulcer care where patients can have their legs treated by nurses while socialising with others in the same position as them.

Every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday members of the club are welcomed by a team of district nurses from Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust and volunteers at The Tolley Centre in Worcester to receive treatment while they enjoy a cup of tea and biscuits.

Members can also get advice and support for leg problems such as leg ulcers, swollen legs and eczema, and share their experiences with others.

In celebration of their 10 year anniversary, members, staff and the local Mayor attended to enjoy a tea party at the centre.

The event was successful and brought people who have been involved from the start together to honour the club.

Mel Roberts, Community Care Service Delivery Unit Lead – South at Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, said: “Although these patients are able to have their leg problems treated in their own homes, our nurses see great benefit in the social aspect of Leg Club with members sharing their thoughts and even discussing self-treatment which allows them to be more empowered.

“It is great that we are involved in such a positive service that is growing from strength to strength and is becoming more popular amongst our patients each year,” she added.
