A BUDDING journalist of the future and University of Worcester student has been shortlisted for a prestigious media industry award.
Kathryn Emerson, who graduates in November, is one of only two students shortlisted in the 2017 Midlands Media Awards which is organised by the Birmingham Press Club.
The student’s own magazine, called Venture, which she produced on the journalism course at the city’s university, has been shortlisted in the magazine/supplement category.
With more than 200 entries to the awards, Kathryn faces stiff competition from four existing publications: ArtsBeat, Birmingham Living, Midlands Business Insider, Shropshire Business and Birmingham 2022.
Kathryn’s travel magazine was described as “excellent” by Craig Hooper, the External Examiner for the University of Worcester journalism course.
The budding journalist has also gained paid work at BBC Radio Shropshire during her final year and is now employed as a Broadcast Assistant.
Kathryn said: “I’m so humbled and proud to have my magazine short listed, it was a real labour of love and something I thoroughly enjoyed creating.”It means a great deal to see that it has been enjoyed and acknowledged by the judges.”
Course leader, Rachel Ammonds, added: “Kathryn is a talented multi-media journalist, who can turn her strong ideas into engaging content.
“I am sure she is at the beginning of a great career in journalism.”
