Kathryn makes the headlines with Midlands Media Award

A BUDDING student journalist from the University of Worcester graduated and scooped a top prize at the Midlands Media Awards on the same day.

Kathryn Emerson, who is already working as a freelance journalist at BBC Shropshire, won the Magazine of the Year Award for her travel magazine, Venture, which was highly praised by the judges.

The 22-year-old collected her award from veteran ITV Central presenter Bob Warman at a glittering ceremony at Canalside, Birmingham last Thursday just hours after her graduation ceremony at Worcester Cathedral.

At her graduation ceremony, Kathryn also won the Bullivant Award for innovative journalism. The award, now in its second year, is funded by Chris Bullivant, the owner of Bullivant Media which publishes the Worcester and Malvern Observer.

Kathryn said: “This is amazing. I am really honoured.”

Claire Wolfe, Principal Lecturer in journalism¬† at the University of Worcester, added: “Students on the BA (Hons) course have been consistently achieving success and winning awards that help them to gain work in a multi-platform environment.”
