Inspired by his dad to take on challenge

A CARING Worcester man will saddle up for an extreme bike ride from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas to raise vital funds for a pancreatic cancer charity in memory of his father.

Dean Grubb, from Blackpole Villages, will fly out to the United States in October for the eight day, 372 mile challenge and is hoping to raise awareness and money for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

The 35-year-old will also be cycling in memory of his father, Allan, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer last year.

Allan, who loved cycling and walking, was diagnosed on November 21 with pancreatic, lung and liver cancer after previously being misdiagnosed with a chest infection and a partially collapsed lung. He died just three weeks later on December 16.

Dean said none of the family thought it was something life threatening but vowed to make his dad proud.

He added: “My dad was always 100 per cent in my corner and would always help me in any way he could, any way he knew how. That’s a proper dad.

“Hopefully this cycle trip will make him proud and raise a bit of money for fighting this disease. I just hope I make it”

“He was a man that did things right up until the end. He and another guy built himself and his partner Kathy a conservatory in the summer of 2016, at the age of 68, so a physical challenge is something he would have liked.”

Ali Stunt, founder of Pancreatic Cancer Action, said: “We are so delighted that Dean is giving his time and effort to take on such a challenging bike ride in aid of Pancreatic Cancer Action.

“The story of Allan’s diagnosis is one that we hear of far too often which is why it is so important to back him in his fundraising efforts.”

“We rely solely on donations from the public and thanks to people like Dean we can continue our vital work of research into early diagnosis and raising awareness or pancreatic cancer.”
