In the running to help the hospice

Worcester Editorial 6th May, 2017   0

A WORCESTER fund-raiser will don his big blue pants to raise cash for St Richard’s Hospice in the Go Dad Run Big Blue Pants Relay Race.

Keith McCabe will limber up for the event in honour of his father Randolph McCabe who was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer last June.

After a successful operation, the 70-year-old has now been given the all clear and continues on his road to recovery.

Keith, 45, decided to raise funds for the hospice after finding out about hospice care through the charity’s shop in St Swithun’s Street.

“Most people raise funds for a particular charity because they have been touched in some way by the services they provide. My story is somewhat different,” he added.

“St Richard’s has a real place in the community and living so close to one of its stores,

“I have seen first-hand how important volunteers, donations and the goodwill of local people all are to continuing the fantastic work the hospice provides,” he added.

The race will take place on Friday, May 26 at Worcester Racecourse ahead of the main Go Dad Run event at the same venue on Sunday, July 23.

The hospice is looking for ten teams of three; teams will sprint along the final stretch of the racecourse, exchanging their big pants in relay; entry is £45 per team plus an online booking fee with a race start time of 6.30pm between the second and third races.

And the third annual Go Dad Run event in the city will raise awareness and funds for a variety of charities such as Prostrate Cancer UK, Bowel Cancer UK, Orchid and CALM.

Offering both a 5k run from 10.30am and a 10k run from 10.40am the July 23 event is being organised in partnership with the national project launched by former Olympian Colin Jackson CBE.

Trisha Cavell, fund-raising director at St Richard’s Hospice said: “By bringing together dads and sons, brothers and cousins, neighbours, workmates and friends who are willing to get involved in a run and play their part in getting men to think about their minds and bodies, we hope that events such as Go Dad Run can have a positive effect on their lives and health.”
