House building is on the rise

Worcester Editorial 13th Aug, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

HOUSE building in Worcester has climbed by more than 37 per cent in the last year, according to new figures.

Figures released by Worcester City Council show that 637 new homes were built in the faithful city in 2015/16.

Also, in the same period 26 homes were either demolished or converted to other uses – giving a net figure of 611 new homes in the city.

This means there has been a 35.7 per cent increase the total number of new homes in Worcester compared to the same period last, when just 450 homes were built.

However, figures also show that fewer new homes are likely to be completed in 2016/17.

The figures, which have been compiled as part of a report to the city council’s planning committee, confirms Worcester has a five-year land supply in place.

This means the city’s housing needs over the next five years can be met due to the new housing developments which will be springing up across Worcester.

Coun Geoff Williams, Cabinet member for Economic Prosperity and Growth, said: “Providing homes for our residents, ensuring they can continue to live and work in our city, is one of the biggest challenges Worcester faces, so it’s very good news that so many new homes were completed in the last year.

“A priority for our administration is to ensure that people from all walks of life can enjoy the benefits of living in our city, so I’m particularly pleased to see the increase in affordable housing.”
