Hollie rises to meet challenge

Worcester Editorial 21st Feb, 2019   0

A TALENTED Nunnery Wood High School student scooped success during an annual conference which promotes careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for young women.

Hollie Milton was picked from more than 300 girls as the winner of one of the challenges which they were given on the day which saw teenagers in years 10 and 11 attend the annual Monster Confidence conference in Birmingham.

The conference works to inspire, encourage and support young women into STEM careers. Only 21 per cent of those working in STEM-related roles across the UK are women, only seven per cent of engineers are women and 17 per cent of those working in technology are women.

The goal is to promote science and engage more girls, aged from five to 21-years-old, by running workshops, panels and mentoring schemes, which are fun-filled.

Hollie came out on top in a challenge which involved posting work on Instagram and seeing which piece attracted the most likes.

Hollie watched a video of the conference mascot dancing and then learnt the dance and posted it to Instagram.

“I was very surprised to win and I am very much looking forward to my prize,” she said.

The prize is an all-expenses paid meal with inspirational women from the secret service GCHQ.

Head girl Molly Phillips said: “Today has taught me all you need is confidence in yourself and your abilities and it can get you anywhere.”
