Historic church is talk’s focus

Worcester Editorial 19th Aug, 2017   0

THE HISTORY of Great Witley Church will be on the agenda at the next meeting of the Worcester Civic Society.

Members will welcome Harold Robinson to Worcester Porcelain Museum on Severn Street on Wednesday, August 23 for the talk from 7.30pm.

Located next to Witley Court, the church was in regular use until 1937 when a catastrophic fire destroyed the court.

After a period of neglect, an extensive restoration was undertaken from 1965 and the church is now considered to be Britain’s finest baroque church.

Howard was for many years a secondary school science teacher in Framlingham, Suffolk.

After he retired he and his wife moved across country to be nearer his wife’s family in Cheshire and also two of his daughters and their children one of whom lives near Birmingham, the other one near Oswestry.

He is passionately interested in two churches local to where he now lives in Ombersley, one being Worcester Cathedral where he is a guide and the other Great Witley Church where he is a steward.

Great Witley Church, adjacent to the court, is one of the most amazing churches not only in Worcestershire but also in the whole of Great Britain in that its décor, which mostly came from another church in North London, is sumptuously stunning.

Admission to the talk is free and for more information call Phil Douce, Worcester Civic Society Chairman on 07760 352086 or e-mail [email protected]
