A LONG campaign by local resident Hannah Cooper has resulted in much-needed cycle parking being installed at the Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum on The Tything.
Hannah started a petition back in June 2019 asking for cycle parking to be provided, so visitors would be able to make sustainable transport choices and help ease the city’s traffic congestion.
But despite the petition being signed by more than 400 people, it was rejected by the former County Council cabinet member for Highways, Coun Alan Amos.
Now cycle parking has been installed.
Hannah said: “I’m delighted the cycle parking has been installed at one of my favourite Worcester buildings. This will be a huge help to museum-goers during the cost of living crisis.
“Families have told me that they have not come to the gallery as there was nowhere to lock a bike – so the cycle parking could actually provide a boost to the local economy and increase visitor numbers.”
“The Tything is one of the most air polluted areas of the city with traffic often at a standstill. The petition cited the fact that Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council have declared Climate Emergencies and mentioned that there is evidence that people are more likely to cycle to their destination if convenient cycle parking is available.
The owner of the award-winning Little Al’s café in the art gallery, Alex Daw said, “Being able to encourage people to travel more sustainably and to come and visit the museum without driving is really good and with the cycle parking right outside it will hopefully encourage people to come and visit our café.”
