Green fashionistas hit the catwalk with their own creations in Worcester

FIRST-time models took centre-stage in Worcester wearing fantastical outfits they had designed and sewn themselves.

And with all the outfits fashioned using reclaimed materials from sustainability charity Remade, every one of the colourful costumes was ‘green’.

Many of the adults and children involved had not used a sewing machine until they were inspired by the challenge of ‘Fashion Fantasia’ with an opportunity to create their own costume and début their designs on the Crowngate catwalk on Saturday (February 8).

Hair and make up was done by a team of professionals and volunteers for the live performance, hosted by creative director and workshop tutor Brenda Killigrew.

The project has been run by sustainability charity Remade Worcester, in partnership with Inkberrow Design Centre. Trustees of Remade said the aim was to introduce creative design and practical sewing skills to a new generation and encourage them to buck fast-fashion in favour of making their own clothes from reclaimed materials.

Besides experienced dressmakers and adult amateurs, GCSE Textiles students and a clutch of creative under-elevens took part in costume workshops at Remade’s Crowngate shop and the Inkberrow Design Centre, with inspiration ranging from Harry Potter and ‘Stitch! The Movie’ to SteamPunk.

Remade’s head of trustees Sue Fry said: “I have loved seeing the young people taking part in the workshops in readiness for the fashion show.

“They were glowing and excited by the choices of fabulous fabrics and haberdashery they could choose from at Remade and astonished to think that this might all have gone into landfill. Two of the students wanted jobs here when they finished school.

“I feel very proud to be part of this project and the making of Remade into this marvellous resource for the community. To see the blossoming skills and enthusiasm of the young people as they learn and experience new things through the workshop has been inspirational, particularly at a time when resources and curriculum at school is very limited for this kind of experience.”
