Great Wall trek set to march up funds for St Richard’s Hospice

AN INTREPID county mother and son are preparing to take on an adventurous challenge in support of St Richard’s Hospice.

Claire Way and her 17-year-old son Evan, from Abberley near Worcester, will spend five days trekking a section of the Great Wall of China – climbing thousands of steps and stopping at farmhouses along the way.

They have been training for the challenge and are looking forward to setting foot on the historic fortification this October.

Mrs Way, 47, said: “We are both really looking forward to the challenge, it looks so exciting and we can’t wait to put our walking boots – and knees – to the test.

“We have both done fund-raisers and enjoy walking, but have never done anything like this before or been to China.

“We both love travelling and are lucky to have been to some lovely places so it will be great to visit such a different place like China.”

The pair are well on their way to reaching their £2,000 fund-raising target after taking part in car boot sales and holding a cream tea afternoon.

“We are so happy to be able to walk for St Richard’s,” said Mrs Way, who is a teaching assistant at Broadwas CE Primary School.

“We know a few people and their families now that have been supported by the hospice and it’s for them and all the people that it needs to carry on helping that we will be doing it for.”

Jodi Brandwood, St Richard’s Hospice fund-raiser, said: “This challenge will be an amazing experience for Claire and Evan – we hope they have a fantastic time.

“Together they have already raised a terrific total to support our hospice care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses, and we are very grateful for their support.”
