Grant ramps up support for the club

SKATEBOARDERS and BMX bikers are on a high after a “unique” sports club in Worcester received a £12,500 cash injection.

Bosses at Worcester City Council have agreed to handover the five figure sum to Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club which runs day and after-school, evening and weekend activities for youngsters.

The £12,582 grant, which was agreed at a recent cabinet meeting will pay for the installation of new energy-efficient lighting at the skate park and car park as well as inside the main club building.

Coun David Wilkinson, cabinet member for safer and stronger communities, said the money would also save the club around £1,800 a year.

“I think most of you will be aware that this club does some fantastic work for the local children and teenagers,” he said.

“It gives them the opportunity to develop some quite amazing skills on their skateboards and bikes.

“I think this is a great way to support some of the sport stars of the future.”

Coun Andy Roberts added: “This is unique. The last time I went I got chatting to groups of young people and one of them came from Birmingham – that is how good this facility is.

“It is tremendously well used, so I am extremely pleased to support this proposal.”

When the new lighting is installed, it is expected to increase safety at the site and allow cyclists and boarders to practise their skills later into the evening and even in the winter.

Speaking after the meeting, Phil Weston OBE, development manager at Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club, said: “We’ve been working to support the welfare of young people in Worcester since 1976 and I think everyone who comes into contact with us realises the importance of our work.

“It’s great that Worcester City Council is supporting us in this way, helping us to continue to make a positive contribution to providing young people’s activities in the city.”
