CHILDREN from a Malvern school have raised thousands of pounds after a sponsored walk event for a cause close to their heart.
Hanley Swan Primary School children walked, skipped, and ran a mile around the school to raise funds for their sister school Maweni Primary School, located in Tanga, Tanzania.
More than £3,200 was raised altogether through The Maweni Mile project, exceeding the original £500 target.
The money raised will enable Maweni school to purchase five hectares of land to grow sisal, a fibrous plant that is used to make string and rope, which they can harvest and sell every six months for a profit.
They can then use this money to feed the many orphans at the school and support them in their education, as well as buy much-needed resources for the rest of the school.
Hanley Swan Primary School has been linked with Maweni Primary School for 13 years, the link involves reciprocal visits each year, building friendship and education of the adults and pupils.
Mr Pratley, headteacher of Hanley Swan Primary School said: “The children had a great time taking part in this wonderful event and raising money for Maweni’s Sisal Project.
“It was a remarkable total which just shows the way the whole school community feels about our link with Maweni, and it really will make a huge difference to the life of the children in Maweni.”
Mr Wallace Joseph, headteacher of Maweni Primary School, said: “I am blown away by the generosity and very grateful for all the support, it will make a big difference to the education of all the children in my school”.
