Going the distance to help raise charity cash

A TEAM of accountants from Worcester will be swapping their suits for walking boots to take part in a charity walking challenge.

The five colleagues from accountant firm Bishop Fleming, Julian Carroll, Shaun Mooney, Chris Ireland, Phil Redgate and Ian Smith, will take on the annual, 31-mile Worcestershire Way walk on Friday, June 17 in aid of St Richard’s Hospice.

Starting at 6am in Bewdley and finishing on the slopes of the Malvern Hills, the event offers the opportunity to walk the whole of the Worcestershire way in a day to support hospice care across the county.

Ian Smith, Partner at Bishop Fleming, who has completed the challenge five times before, said: “All of our lives, at some stage, are impacted by cancer and other serious illnesses, so we wanted to support the great work that St Richard’s does to care for patients and their families.

“On the day of the walk, we are sure that it will be a challenge to ignore the temptations of my local, the Talbot at Knightwick, but we will be more than compensated with the spectacular scenery and the knowledge that our families, friends, colleagues and clients are all supporting our challenge.”

Alison Parkes, Senior Fundraiser at St Richard’s Hospice, said: “This event has been running now for 11 years and is always very popular. Some of our dedicated supporters take on the Worcestershire Way challenge year after year and there is always a great team spirit and camaraderie. This isn’t an event for the faint hearted, and we certainly recommend some training beforehand.

“Many people take on this challenge in memory of someone special, as a way of saying thank you for the hospice care they received. But often at the end of the walk they realise that they have achieved something fantastic for themselves too,” she added.

The event costs £10 to enter but relies on sponsorship and donations to be successful. For more information, contact Alison Parkes by email [email protected] or call 01905 763963.
