Getting ready to sing in celebration

Worcester Editorial 16th Mar, 2017   0

A WORCESTER care home is inviting city residents to join a nationwide sing-along to celebrate Vera Lynn’s 100th birthday.

Perry Manor care home on Charles Hasting Way is inviting the community to strike a chord for the forces’ sweetheart’s milestone birthday on Sunday (March 19) from 2.30pm.

Ahead of the celebration, residents at the care home have been making red and blue bunting and war-time themed decorations.

Singer Martin Leonard will be on hand to get everyone in the party spirit with classic songs from the era. Guests will be treated to tea and cake prepared by head chef, Pete McGregor.

Katherine Matthews, home manager at Perry Manor, said: “We are all looking forward to taking a walk down memory lane and having a good sing-along to celebrate Vera Lynn’s milestone birthday.

“Singing can be a powerful reminiscence activity, and Vera Lynn has written a number of iconic songs that many residents are likely to have grown up listening to.

“Even when memories become particularly hard to remember, often music can still be recalled, so a group sing-along can often be very calming for those living with dementia, and can encourage them to talk about memories from their childhood.

“We are thrilled to be joining Care UK care homes across the country and look forward to welcoming the people of Worcester for this special occasion.”
