Gas main delays extend closure

A BUSY city street will be closed to traffic for a further month after gas chiefs admitted work to replace a gas main was behind scheduled.

Sansome Walk was due to re-open to traffic on January 28 but will now be closed until Monday, March 4 to to allow extra time for the gas mains renewal work, plus resurfacing work and maintenance work on the railway bridge.

The work began at the end of last year but gas company Cadent admitted work would now spill over into the spring to allow additional time for gas mains to be renewed which has already included additional work on ageing gas valves.

“Worcestershire Highways will be resurfacing the road in collaboration with us. We have also collaborated with Severn Trent Water, having discovered a leak on their network,” a statement read.

“This extension will also enable maintenance work to take place on electrical cables and bridge inspections by Network Rail on the railway bridge crossing Sansome Walk. By carrying out all these works together, under one road closure, it will avoid the need for separate road closures at different times.”

“We are sorry for any inconvenience caused to the local community.

“Every effort is being made to finish this essential gas mains upgrade as soon as possible, including working those weekends where it can help to speed up the project.

“Once the new pipes have been laid we will not have to replace them for at least 80 years,” the statement added.
