Fund-raising bid to allow brave Adam to make memories

A MAJOR fund-raising bid to ensure a county father with terminal cancer can share some memories with his young family has smashed its initial £3,000 target.

Heartbroken father Martin Nicholls has taken the wraps off the Just Giving page in honour of his son Adam, 34, and his family after they were handed the worst possible news.

While he hopes any money raised will help the family in any way possible, Martin said he hoped the online effort would ensure Adam, originally from Worcester but now living in Evesham, and his wife could create as many memories as possible for four-year-old disabled son Jeremy, who the couple adopted in 2017.

Adam was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma last March. This is an uncommon form of malignant neoplasm which arises within the major and minor salivary glands of the head and neck.

“We were very fortunate despite the initial prognosis, a consultant reviewed Adam’s diagnosis and was in a position to get a team of professionals together to perform surgery with the intention of removing the tumour,” dad Martin said.

In May 2019, Adam had two separate operations to debulk the tumour. Following this he underwent six and half weeks of radiotherapy to remove the remaining malignant cells. Dad Martin said his determination to fight the disease was driven by his love for his family.

“I was immensely proud of my son with the strength and courage he showed throughout the recovery of the surgery considering he also suffered two mini strokes and lost movement to one side of his face and nerve damage to his eye resulting him in not being able to open the eyelid,” he said.

The family were overjoyed in January when Adam received the all clear and Adam was on top of the world and very much looking forward to planning for his future. Unfortunately this time of sheer happiness was very much short lived.

In May 2020 after suffering symptoms, the family’s world came crashing down following test results which confirmed the cancer had returned aggressively.

Adam is now to receive palliative care and has just recently started chemotherapy.

“I would like to support Adam, his wife and young son through what time they have left and beyond. No one should have to go through this and its beyond heart-breaking to see my son suffer but he deserves some quality time,” Martin added.
