Friends’ 100 mile trek for top cause

Worcester Editorial 27th Jun, 2019   0

A WORCESTER fund-raiser and her friend are walking 100 miles in 48 hours to raise money for Charlotte and Craig’s Saving Hearts Foundation.

Emma Glasspool, together with Chantelle Hancox, will be stepping out from Halfords headquarters in Icknield Street Drive in Redditch where they both work at midday on Friday (June 28) heading for The Bluebell Inn in Llandovery in Wales 100 miles away, which they hope to reach by midday on Sunday (June 30).

Training has consisted of brisk walking for up to four hours at a go and sessions in the gym.

They’ll be carrying all their own kit, although they haven’t decided what’s going in the rucksacks yet.

“That’s a job for the night before!” said Chantelle.

The challenge is personal too.

“I went to school with Craig Underwood, Charlotte was a couple of years older than us and Carrick, who died last year, was a year below,” said Chantelle.

“Charlotte and Craig’s Saving Hearts Foundation is a great cause and this will be a real challenge.”

Their route will take them through Worcester, on to Hereford then through the Brecon Beacons to Llandovery.

With nothing booked in advance the duo will be looking to see how far they can go before finding a place to stay for the night.

“We didn’t want to commit ourselves to particular places just in case we’re going better than expected,” said Chantelle.

Joining them on Sunday for the final stretch will be Rob Underwood, who together with his wife Maggie set up CCSHF following the deaths of their daughter Charlotte and son Craig to rare heart conditions.

Since then the charity has installed more than 360 defibrillators at venues across the county and worked tirelessly to promote lifesaving skills like CPR.

“What Emma and Chantelle are doing is fantastic – it’s a long old walk they’ve set themselves but it’s all about getting more lifesaving defibrillators,” said Rob.

“We cannot thank them enough.”
