Flowers and trees to complete work at key junction

HIGHWAYS chiefs have begun the final part of the revamp to the area around a busy junction in the heart of the city centre.

The area at the bottom of Commandery Road will be improved as part of the revamp following the completion of a Worcestershire County Council scheme to upgrade the signals and improve the junction at Sidbury.

County chiefs and Worcester City Council are working together to fund the improvements at one of the gateways to the city.

A new pedestrian and seating area along with the restoration of an avenue of trees and new bespoke wildflower planters will be among the work carried out.

Cabinet member for highways, Coun Alan Amos said: “Now we have completed the hugely complex scheme to improve the Sidbury Junction, we will now move to completing the improvements at the bottom of Commandery Road.

“This part of the redevelopment of the area is being part funded by Worcester City Council and I’m delighted to be working with them to further improve this gateway to the city.”

Wildflowers will be planted along the entire length of this area, interspersed between an avenue of seven similar aged cherry trees.

Some of the semi mature trees to be planted are replacements for those removed to widen the approach to the junction with Sidbury.

Coun Lucy Hodgson, chair of Worcester City Council’s Place and Economic Development Sub Committee said:

“These works will complement the new paving which has already been laid, lifting the area as a whole.”

Further improvements will also include replacement of the missing railings along the canal side wall towards its southern end near Bath Road, scheduled to be carried out later this year.
