Floods force cancellation of Pitchcroft fireworks

Worcester Editorial 29th Oct, 2019   0

THE RISING flood waters in the city have forced the cancellation of the annual bonfire at Pitchcroft race course for only the second time in more than 50 years.

Organisers of the Saturday’s (November 2) event were forced to pull the plug yesterday (Monday) because of the severe flooding in the city.

Worcester racecourse and surrounding car parks are already underwater and the Environment Agency confirmed the River Severn was still rising slowly this morning (Tuesday).

Organisers have confirmed all pre purchased tickets had been fully refunded and paid tribute to the messages of support from the local community.

The River Severn is currently at its highest level since the floods of February 2014 and Environment Agency staff will close the flood gate on Hylton Road this afternoon for the first time in five years.

City council bosses have urged motorists to avoid Pitchcroft and Newport Street car parks because of flooding but stressed the city centre was open for business.
