Firms set to benefit from waste service

WORCESTER businesses will benefit from a commercial waste and recycling service when it is introduced in April.

Coun Joy Squires, chair of Worcester City Council’s Environment Committee, confirmed the news in response to a question from Coun Neil Laurenson at a council meeting on November 21.

The Green Party councillor raised concerns from local businesses about the amount of packaging going to landfill and claimed one businessman said he would be willing to pay for the waste and recycling to be collected.

“As a result, I would like to ask when the recommendations contained in the recycling task and finish group’s report, such as introducing a commercial waste recycling service, be acted upon?,” he said.

In response, Coun Squires confirmed the service would be introduced following feedback from council officers.

“The introduction of the service is a key part of the city’s improvement plan and I’m delighted to say our officers are working towards providing it from April next year,” she said.

“A commercial waste and recycling service will generate revenue for the city council and hopefully further increase recycling rates in Worcester.

“Being able to offer such a service to our businesses is very welcome and I am delighted to see it come to fruition,” she added.
