Fine and unpaid work for smashing window

A MAN has been ordered to pay nearly £600 and work 40 hours unpaid after he headbutted and smashed a window in Crowngate shopping centre.

Mathew Bayfield, of Happy Land North, pleaded guilty at Worcester Magistrates Court last Friday (March) to causing damage to a window costing about £450 through reckless behaviour.

Prosecution solicitor Owen Beale told the court on Saturday February 28 at 5.55am Bayfield was with a woman at the bus station having an argument which was seen on CCTV by members of staff. They went to check on them and found the window smashed. The woman explained Bayfield had headbutted the window.

The 20-year-old said at the time he was tipsy but knew what he was doing, he had lots on his mind and hit the window instead of hitting a person.

Defence solicitor Sam Lamsdale said: “He did intend to strike the window but not to smash it, his actions were extremely reckless.”

District Judge Nigel Cadbury gave Bayfield a short community order to extend the on he is currently half way through. He ordered him to pay £450 compensation, £85 court costs and £60 victim surcharge.
