EXCLUSIVE: UKIP choose Hickling as candidate for city

UKIP has chosen branch secretary Paul Hickling as its candidate for June’s snap election, the Observer can reveal

Mr Hickling was revealed as the candidate on the day Jeremy Corbyn came to Worcester and revealed Labour would scrap hospital car parking charges should it win the General Election.

The announcement was attacked by Mr Hickling who told the Observer the idea was announced as one of the party’s pledges a fortnight ago by party leader Paul Nuttall.

“I was shocked and surprised when I heard it as its one of our five main pledges for the General Election,” he said.

“I know the Tories have stolen some of our policies but to take ideas during a General Election campaign is amazing, he added.

Mr Hickling fought the Bedwardine seat in last week’s Worcestershire County Council elections.

He saw his party share of the vote dramatically fall and finished bottom of the pile with 126 votes.

Coun Alan Amos won the seat against Mr Hickling and three further candidates with 1,460 votes.

“It’s an honour to be selected to represent UKIP Worcester in the up and coming snap General Election,” he said.

“I thank the branch committee for their support, especially James Goad for his political insight and guidance over the last two years.

“As a true Brexiteer, I will not allow the Brexit for which we voted for during the referendum to be watered down by those who came late to the game and switched sides.

“I will fight to ensure the people of Worcester have another option to the established parties’ way of doing things post Brexit if elected to Westminster.”
