A WORCESTER care home resident has celebrated her milestone 100th birthday with a traditional tea party.
Surrounded by loved ones, Rosanna Blakely celebrated her special day on Monday (January 9) at Sanctuary Care’s Regent Residential Care Home, in St John’s.
Born in Dublin, Rosanna grew up with her eight siblings and parents Patrick and Eleanor Waine, where she enjoyed her school days in the Irish capital, before meeting husband-to-be Harry Blakely in 1939 – three years before the Second World War.
Meeting at their local cinema, Harry and Rosanna instantly hit it off and the pair went onto marry during the war, before setting up home in Worcester in 1941, as Harry had to relocate due to work.
The pair went onto have two children June and David, who live in Worcester and Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire, respectively.
During the Second World War, Rosanna stayed at home and looked after her young family, before getting a part time job at Kays’ mail-order factory.
The Blakely family has now blossomed into four generations with three grandchildren, Andrew, Rachel and Tom, and one great grandchild, Edward.
When asked her secret to reaching the milestone age, Rosanna said: “I’ve always exercised and believed everything should be enjoyed in moderation, including a glass of wine or a gin and tonic.”
“The most significant memories I look back on are supporting my family and being there for my children as much as I possibly could be.”
Rosanna’s daughter June, said: “Mum has always been there for me and has done all that she can by us. I’m so pleased so many generations have had the privilege of meeting her.
“I have so many fond memories with my mother and celebrating her 100th birthday is another one to add to the very long list.”
Bridie Gray, Sanctuary Care’s activities leader at the home, said: “Rosanna is so lovely and very kind, she has the warmest smile. It’s wonderful to celebrate such a special birthday with her loved ones.”
