Enjoying a spot of undercover work

WORCESTER residents enjoyed a rare chance to become geophysicists for a day when they mapped out the remains of a former Roman farmstead in Warndon Villages.

Members of the public were invited along to the site, near Mabbs Close in Trotshill, to join a geophysics team in using specialist equipment to map out the remains of the former Roman farm.

The results of the survey helped to identify the remains of structures and traces of human activities left in the soil.

An archaeological dig will now take place at the site in November, which residents are also being invited along to, and once the excavation is complete, part of the land will be converted into allotments which residents will have the opportunity to hire.

The project has been made possible courtesy of a £10,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £9,300 from Worcester City Council, as well as a £500 contribution by coun Andy Roberts, from the Worcestershire County Councillors’ Divisional Fund.

James Dinn, archaeological officer at Worcester City Council, said: “This project is a rare opportunity to uncover the past and learn more about the lives of Roman citizens who were in the Trotshill area.”
