Electric bikes to hit roads

TWENTY-FIVE electric bikes will soon be whizzing their way around West Mercia areas following an investment from the local police force.

Police and Crime Commissioner of West Mercia Police, John Campion, said the bikes will hopefully make the force ‘more visible and accessible’ to communities.

And this new approach is a major step towards being a more eco-friendly force, giving officers the chance to ditch their cars and help reduce gas emissions.

Mr Campion said the bikes will help improve police visibility when they are tackling community concerns like anti-social behaviour and drug use.

And that they will enable officers to police in harder to reach areas, such as town centres, alleyways and river and canal paths.

The PCC, who allocated a whopping £25,000 to fund the project, said: “I have always promised to ensure that West Mercia Police is as efficient and effective as it can be when tackling the issues that matter most to our communities.

“I have listened when communities have said that they want to see an increase in officer visibility as well as a reduction of the impact of policing on the environment.

“I believe these additional electric bikes are a great example of this commitment in action.”

Each local policing area: Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin will receive three bikes each.
