Early call to join in with commemoration

Worcester Editorial 24th Feb, 2018   0

A RALLYING call has gone out to bell ringers from across Worcester to play their part in a major nationwide First World War commemoration

Ringing Out for Peace takes place on Armistice Day, November 11 and will see more than 1,000 churches and cathedrals ringing their bells simultaneously at 7.05pm.

An appeal has gone out to church bell ringers around Britain to join in this major event, and has been backed by senior politicians at Worcester City Council.

The Leader and Deputy Leader of Worcester City Council are encouraging the city’s bell ringers to sign up for a nationwide event to mark the centenary of the end of the conflict.

Coun Adrian Gregson, leader of Worcester City Council, said: “The centenary of the First World War has allowed us to remember, learn and participate in activities in commemoration. These events planned for the rest of this year, culminating on November 11, serve to remind us how fragile but also how valuable peace really is. Worcester has an opportunity to remember in many ways including an active commitment to peaceful resolution of conflict today as much as 100 years ago.”

Coun Marc Bayliss, deputy leader of Worcester City Council, said: “The peal of bells across Worcester and across the nation will be a beautiful and poignant way to mark this important anniversary. I would urge church bell ringers in Worcester and beyond to sign up for what I’m sure will be a very moving commemoration.”

Ringing Out for Peace will be part of a day-long programme of national events to be called Battle’s Over.

Bell ringers, or campanologists, can register to join Ringing Out for Peace at www.brunopeek.co.uk
