Dragons raise tidy sum for charity

A TEAM of city midwives took to the water in a bid to raise money for a cause close to their hearts.

The group of 15 Worcester Bolton Dragons, from Worcestershire Royal, were one of the 29 crews to race along the River Severn on Sunday (June 8) for the charity regatta ‘Race the Dragon’ in aid of the hospital’s cardiac unit.

They have been dragon-boating since 2012, in memory of their friend and colleague Lorraine Bolton, who was treated in the hospital’s cardiac catheter suite.

Since they have started racing, £3,000 has been raised.

Craig Cliff, event co-ordinator, said: “Our annual dragon boat regatta is a fun event to raise money for charity. The aim was to get local teams involved and active.

“When our coach Nigel Leigh had a heart attack in 2012, he was treated very well by the cardiology department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital. We’re very pleased to be supporting this charity.”
