Don’t bin revised collections letter is message

Worcester Editorial 19th Jan, 2018   0

MAJOR changes to Worcester’s bin collections have moved a step closer after letters informing city residents of the changes began to be delivered.

Residents are being urged to make sure they read the letter and take note of any changes to when their black and green bins are emptied and, importantly, to make sure they don’t throw the letter away.

The changes will begin on Monday, January 29 as recycling and refuse collections will still take place on alternate weeks but the day of the week will change for some residents.

City council chiefs have split bin collections into city zones, with black and green bin collections taking place in different parts of the city during the same week.

Currently all black bins are collected across the whole city in a single week and all green bins are emptied the following week.

Around half of Worcester households will see no change to current arrangements.

Environment Committee chair Coun Joy Squires said: “Please do keep an eye out for your letter – and please make sure you read it. Don’t throw it away!

“The letter will tell you important information about whether there are changes to your bin collections.

“You might need to put your bin out on a different day, or your green bin collection might be a week later than usual, so this letter really matters.”

Coun Alan Feeney, vice chair of the Environment Committee, said: “This change is being made after we carefully considered a number of options to improve the overall efficiency of our waste collection service. We are confident that these changes balance the needs of our residents, the wellbeing of our staff and the wear and tear on our vehicles.

“I want to reassure people we never make changes to your routines lightly, but we know that this will bring huge benefits to the city. Once the new bin arrangements are in place, they will be very easy to adapt to.”

City council bosses are also reminding residents to ensure bins or sacks are always placed out by 7am on the day of collection.

From January 29 residents will be able to check bin collection dates throughout the year in their area at www.worcester.gov.uk/recycling-waste.
