A WARNING has gone out to dog owners after an outbreak of the deadly virus Parvo in Worcestershire which has led to eight pets dying in the first two months of the year.
The county’s dog wardens have expressed their concerns about the number of strays which have been picked up with the canine parvovirus infection (CPV).
Parvo can take on two forms.
Intestinal parvo is characterised by vomiting, diarrhoea and weight loss and the cardiac form attacks the heart muscles of young puppies, leading to death.
Simple regular vaccinations can stop the virus attacking dogs and spreading throughout the canine community.
Pip Singleton, Worcestershire Regulatory Services’ (WRS) Senior Dog Warden, said: “I have personally nursed a dog dying of Parvo and if you could see the trauma they go through, you wouldn’t think twice about getting the vaccine sorted.”
WRS offers help and advice for pet owners who are struggling to meet the financial cost.
She added: “We can help you before the situation gets critical and stop the unnecessary suffering of these loving and loyal creatures.”
