Diglis calling for community centre

Worcester Editorial 30th Jul, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

DIGLIS residents are calling out for community services according to city councillor’s survey.

The questionnaire was carried out by Coun Lynn Denham and Coun Jabba Riaz and filled in by the people of New Diglis.

About 83 per cent of the 80 people asked said they supported plans to open the community centre and were keen to help get activities running in the area.

The original redevelopment plans for Diglis and Old Porcelain Works, carried out by Taylor Wimpey, included a community centre but the current building remains empty.

The two Cathedral Ward councillors were approached last year by organisations interested in the vacant structure and so they arranged the survey to establish the level of support among the residents.

Coun Denham said: “Our survey shows that there is real support for local community facilities and a recognition that these may help to address problems with anti-social behaviour etc.

“With the government cutbacks in local authority funding, there is now no council money to bring the empty community centre to life.

“Residents in New Diglis have told us they want the same local youth and community services that older communities in Worcester have,” she added.

Only 14 people from the area were apposed to a community centre but 43 per cent of those asked wanted to see a place for local groups to meet and 40 per cent called for keep fit classes and yoga.
