A CARING Worcester man has been named Volunteer of the Year for his dedicated work for the community.

Following hundreds of entries from across all areas of the care community, Steve Tallett was announced as the winner at Towergate’s inaugural Care Awards, which celebrates individuals who have demonstrated outstanding excellence in care and pays tribute to people who go above and beyond to provide the best care every single day.

Hosted by actress Sally Phillips, who has starred in some of the nation’s best loved films and television programmes, including Bridget Jones’ Diary, Smack the Pony and Miranda, the Volunteer of the Year category recognises volunteers who have shown passion and commitment to the charity or not-for-profit sector.

Steve was selected to commemorate the countless hours he’s given to help those in his community as well as the fundraising he’s done for Diabetes UK.

He has spent eight years volunteering as a business adviser for young enterprise at Worcester Sixth Form College, helping students to start and run a business and has also worked with young offenders as a volunteer mentor for youth support services.

He was also a volunteer group facilitator and counsellor at Core Community, who work with and support alcoholics on a recovery programme.

James Tugendhat, Towergate Chief Commercial Officer, said: “Steve’s story really stood out to us in the judging process. He demonstrates remarkable excellence in care and is truly deserving of this award and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate him on his accolade.

“Towergate has a longstanding relationship with many care organisations across the country, we have witnessed time and again the remarkable work of carers, and it was be a great pleasure to meet Steve and present him with his award.”

Speaking about the awards, Steve Tallett said: “I feel very honoured and privileged to be announced as the winner of the Volunteer of the Year category at the Towergate Care Awards. I would encourage anyone who wants to give volunteering a go to do so, it’s extremely rewarding and it’s not like a real job because you can fit it in around your own life.

“There were some extremely talented and compassionate people nominated, let alone shortlisted for this award and I want to pay credit to every single one of them for the work they do,” he added.
