Courting popularity

Worcester Editorial 22nd May, 2019   0

COURTROOM comedy will be the ‘order’ of the day this weekend and next when the Worcester Gilbert and Sullivan Society stages its latest production.

The famous courtroom romp Trial By Jury will be performed at Droitwich’s Norbury Theatre at 7.30pm on Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25.

Before it will be A Nice Dilemma which is a precursor to the famous play.

Trial By Jury centres on Angelina who is suing Edwin for breach of promise, claiming he is reneging on his intention to marry her.

He, in turn, argues he should not be punished for loving one girl one day and another the next.

A trial ensues in a bid to find a non-bigamous solution.

Mary Dhonau OBE, who is directing the pieces, wrote A Nice Dilemma.

She said: “Trial by Jury is my favourite Gilbert and Sullivan musical but it is only one act so does not provide a whole evening of entertainment.

“A Nice Dilemma enables us to do that.”

It sees the usher arrive for the trial only to find he has no jury and then has to start recruiting people – some are suitable, some are not.

All the members of the jury recruited are characters from other Gilbert and Sullivan musicals.

“There is a lot of fun and naughtiness in A Nice Dilemma and there have been plenty of laughs during rehearsals.”
