County cycling boost to improve routes

A CASH boost totalling £135,500 has been awarded to Worcestershire County Council to improve cycling and walking routes.

The funds from the Government’s Emergency Active Travel Fund will enhance key commuter pathways.

The Redditch to Bromsgrove route will be improved and a revamp will be undertaken on the Fernhill Heath to Blackpole (Worcester) B4536 link, to connect the large residential village with the main employment and retail areas on the north of the city.

The A449 from Malvern to Worcester corridor will also be revamped for cyclists.

Councillor Alan Amos, cabinet member with responsibility for highways, said the authority wholeheartedly supported active travel and all forms of transport.

“Improving our road network goes hand in hand with improving our cycling network, and remains one of our key priorities.

“This funding will allow us to continue the progress we’ve already made in this area.”

Some of the cash will also fund bike parking at businesses, education and shops.

But while cyclists have welcomed the money some say the county has been short changed.

Josh Robinson, chair of Bromsgrove Liberal Democrats, said the money was only half of what Worcestershire had bid for.

“This is extremely disappointing, the Government asked councils to be ambitious but it looks like we are one of those unambitious councils that were moaned about.

“We have missed out on thousands of pounds of money to improve walking and cycling because our Conservative-led county council put in such a poor bid.”
