Community work is in the awards

Worcester Editorial 12th Mar, 2020   0

WORK by the Newtown Green Community group has been recognised by Fortis Housing and Heart of England.

The group was a finalist in the 2019 Fortis Housing Community Awards and has now also been nominated for the Heart of England ‘It’s your neighbourhood’ award.

Among the group’s achievements are improvements to pathways and access to the green, a new wildflower meadow and regular community litter picks.

The group has also done a huge amount to engage the local community with events such as health walks, children’s activities and ecological surveys.

The Newtown Green Community Group is chaired by Coun Tracey Biggs, who represents Nunnery on Worcester City Council. Coun Biggs attended the Fortis Housing Awards on behalf of the group, along with group members Jenny Moreton and Heather Warner.

“The fantastic work done by the Newtown Green Community group is a brilliant example of community cohesion,” she said.

“It is great to see the improvements we have been able to secure now mean the Green is used much more than before by local residents, who can enjoy the range of activities which are taking place.

“I am looking forward to the further improvements coming to the Green in the near future, including a community orchard, new benches, better signage, goalposts and an improved play park.

“I would like to thank all the residents who have worked so hard as part of the group to contribute to their local community.

The Newtown Green Community Group meets on the first Tuesday of every month and local residents are encouraged to attend and share their ideas.
