Club in safe hands says outgoing chief

Worcester Editorial 8th Dec, 2018   0

OUTGOING Worcester Warriors managing director Gus Mackay said the Sixways side is in safe hands after he revealed he would stand down as the club’s off-field chief.

Mackay will depart Sixways after a spell of almost 18 months at the helm which has seen a management shake-up on and off the field.

The former Zimbabwe international cricketer moves on following Warriors’ takeover by a consortium led by county businessman Jed McCrory.

In a statement, Mackay said it was the right time for him to step down and said he was optimistic about the exciting future ahead of the club under new ownership.

“I am confident with the new owners and current group of players the club will grow from strength to strength and build on the positive start to the season in all competitions,” he said.

“I wish the new owners, Alan Solomons, and all the players all the very best for the rest of the season.”

Former London Broncos chief executive Mackay arrived at Sixways last June with 15 years of experience working across rugby and cricket.

A cricketer who played three internationals for Zimbabwe, Mackay’s first job in this country came in June 2006 as chief executive of Sussex CCC.

The 49-year-old swapped the south coast for south London in 2008 when he was named managing director of Surrey CCC for a two-year spell.

His most recent job in day-to-day professional sport came as chief executive of the Broncos rugby league side which came to an end in March 2014.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved with the club for all their hard work, in particular the staff, board members, sponsors, and supporters for their support during this period of change,” he added.
