Worcester named 'good neighbour' capital of Britain

THE CITY of Worcester has been named the ‘good neighbour’ capital of Britain after a UK poll found residents have the most community spirit.

Carried out by CORGI HomePlan as part of their ‘How Safe is Your Street’ campaign, the study of 2,000 participants revealed that the people of Worcester are among the best in Britain for carrying out acts of neighbourly kindness.

Typical examples include carrying boxes when new people move in, helping in an emergency and offering to pick up shopping for vulnerable neighbours.

Worcester topped the poll alongside York and Swansea, with residents rating themselves as 6.6 out of 10 for community spirit, compared to the UK average of 5.4.

The campaign encourages people to check up on vulnerable neighbours in difficult times, urging people to regularly talk to their neighbours so they don’t feel isolated.

Professor Sandi Mann, from the University of Central Lancashire, said: “It’s great to see people of Worcester driving a return to good old British community spirit.

“CORGI HomePlan’s How Safe Is Your Street campaign reminds us that simple steps such as checking on elderly or vulnerable neighbours should not be the domain of the middle aged. It should be the norm in a caring society and we can all do small things to reach out to neighbours who might just need a helping hand.”

Kevin Treanor, director of CORGI HomePlan, says: “We’re encouraging people to not close their doors at the end of the day but knock on their neighbour’s. As the reality is, people who live a metre away might need help. And it’s not just the single mum who might need a lift to take their kids to school but your elderly neighbour might have pipes damaged by bad weather, overblown fences or a faulty radiator which you could easily help to fix.”
