City to host Oktoberfest for first time

Worcester Editorial 12th May, 2017   0

A HUGELY popular German festival is coming to Worcester as organisers prepare to host Oktoberfest in the city for the first time.

Worcester Oktoberfest will create a Bavarian weekend in October offering a host of German drinks, entertainment and food.

The famous Oompah bands will be playing through the festival with pretzels, sausages and steins served on Friday night and all through Saturday.

The world-famous festival takes place on Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21 at Worcester Racecourse.

It will be the second beer-themed festival at the city’s racecourse following the hugely successful Worcester Beer Festival which this years runs from August 17 to 19.

Laura Gurney, business executive at the racecourse, said: “We are really looking forward to working with Oktoberfest Worcester.

“We wanted to bring something different to the area and think that this will do that.”

It will be open from 6pm until 11pm on the Friday evening, from midday to 5pm and from 6pm to 11pm on the Saturday.

Further details will be revealed during the summer but alcohol and food will not be allowed from outside the festival and anyone under the age of 25 could be asked for photographic ID.

Oktoberfest is a big social event originating in Germany, featuring a lot of eating and drinking and running for 16 days, around six million people attend every year.

During the festival, giant tents capable of holding thousands of revellers are erected with Bavarian music playing in the afternoon before more modern pop music is played in the evening.
