A BID to put Worcestershire Sauce on the map and enshire its link to Worcester in the same way as asparagus is tied to the Vale of Evesham has been launched by a city and county councillor.
Coun Richard Udall has revived his calls for action to be taken three years after he highlighted the problem of fake bottles of Worcestershire Sauce and urged council chiefs to ensure the product has unique local status, ensuring it can only be produced in Worcester.
The St John’s councillor called for council chiefs to work with the owners of the Worcestershire Sauce brand to help promote Worcester as the ‘sauce city’.
“We need factory tours, we need a Lea and Perrins Gift Shop and we may even need a statue of a bottle of Worcestershire Sauce in Cripplegate Park,” he said.
“We have a unique product which is sold all over the world, no other Worcestershire product is as well known, yet it is still being ripped off by pale and poor imitations, which do not stand up to any kind of scrutiny.”
“Not long ago I was outside the Lea and Perrins factory gates for about five minutes, in that time two different pairs of tourists approached the gates, one from Holland and another from America, both took pictures and chatted with me about how much they love our most famous product, both asked if factory tours were available”.
“Worcestershire Sauce is world famous culinary condiment and the Worcestershire a caviar. We should celebrate the product, share in its success and build a relationship between the factory, the council and the people of Worcester, it is a product to be proud of, let’s do it,” he added.
Coun Udall said he would write to City Council leader Coun Marc Bayliss asking him to co-ordinate and organise a campaign to celebrate Worcestershire Sauce in 2019.
