Charity gets insight into life-saving skills

Worcester Editorial 24th Oct, 2023   0

STAFF and volunteers at a Great Malvern-based charity this week learned a set of skills that one day could save a life.

ARCOS, the Association for the Rehabilitation of Communication and Oral Skills, welcomed two volunteer instructors from Heartstart Malvern, which aims to save lives by increasing the chances of surviving a cardiac arrest.

The instructors, Bob Lillis and Jenny Davies, demonstrated simple resuscitation skills and how to use a defibrillator.

ARCOS has recently installed its own defibrillator on the outside wall of its headquarters in Avenue Road.

Mr Lillis said: “Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of many local fundraising groups and individuals we have been able to install 32 defibrillators around Malvern.”

He said the group’s ultimate aim is to have up to 50 public-access defibrillators located around the town, and to have trained 10,000 people in the vital skills by the group’s tenth anniversary in 2027.

During the hour-long session, the ARCOS staff and volunteers were able to use specially-designed training defibrillators, as well as learning other aspects of dealing with someone who is having a cardiac arrest.

Heartstart Malvern is keen to hear from any companies, community groups or anyone else who is willing to host the life-saving courses, which are all free.
