Cathedral to host giraffe gathering

Worcester Editorial 16th Apr, 2018   0

A CITY landmark will host a gathering of giraffes later this year following this summer’s Worcester Stands Tall art trail.

Worcester Cathedral will have a dedicated giraffe sculpture at a location on the trail before hosting its farewell event in the Chapter House.

The event will see 30 decorated giraffe sculptures go on display to the public for the last time before they are auctioned to raise money for the St Richard’s Hospice Build 2020 Appeal.

Worcester Stands Tall is a 10-week long sculpture trail which will see the colourful giraffes tower through the city’s streets between July 9 and September 16 while the farewell event takes place on the weekend of October 5 to 7.

The cathedral joins the ranks of organisations supporting the project and is already home to a pink giraffe, pictured in the Victorian stained glass of its recently-restored West Window.

Canon Georgina Byrne of Worcester Cathedral, said: ‘We are delighted to be taking part in Worcester Stands Tall.

“St Richard’s Hospice does tremendous work and we hope many people will take part in the event this summer to support the hospice, following the giraffes around the city – in which the cathedral has been standing very tall for centuries.”

Sara Matthews, project manager of Worcester Stands Tall, said: “The building is such a magnificent, symbolic part of the city and its fabulous pink giraffe provides a perfect link with our trail.

“We just know our farewell event will be a spectacular way for the public to see all our lovely giraffes together in one place.”

During the trail, there will also be 26 giraffe calf sculptures decorated by schools and community groups and displayed in Crowngate Shopping Centre.

The St Richard’s Hospice Build 2020 Appeal aims to raise the final £1.4million needed to build a bigger hospice, enabling more patients and families to be cared for in Worcestershire.

The total cost for expanding and redeveloping the existing building in Wildwood Drive is £5.3million. Visit www.strichards.org.uk/build2020 for more information.
